After a late registration, Maarten and I were off to Zeeland....I have never been to Vlissingen, and when I actually consulted ANWB website on the route was shocked to see how far it actually was from Amstelveen. A nice 2:05 car ride for a race that I hoped would last about 2:15.
Having arrived at the venue weather was beautiful. Good temperature of some 17C, some clouds and calm sea. What was apparent by looking at the sea was that the current was going to be a big help today...as it was in the exact direction of the swim...nice "tail current".
Location is simply beautiful...many people around, nice little restaurants, cafe's, etc. In summer it must be a place to be at.
This is how the map of the swim, transition zone and finish looks like:
Transition zone was not numbered, so it was first come first served for good spots. Set was done quickly, wet suits were on, and we had only some 20min to get to the start that was 1km away.
On the way to the start point we tested the sea and to my surprise is temperature was quite OK. Now only to ensure there would be no sharks and jelly fish, but as the 1/16 and 1/8 tri started before us and all came alive I thought good stuff...its looking safe.
At the start some 178 athletes, men/women of all ages, many nationalities among which many Belgians due to vicinity. Test swim just to get a little familiar with the temperature and the salty sea.
I started from the mid left of the field. It was a few steps and into the sea with immediate struggle to find the best position in the pack. Rather than going for the masses, I decided to stay on the left and just go in a straight line towards the finish line. Swim went OK, but to be honest I don't think I gave it my 100%. It could have been better I think. As already mentioned swim was very fast as we had the current help. I was out of the sea and into T1 after 15:13....this was the 76 ranked swim.
Swim start:
T1 went without any glitches in 2:14 but was just way too long. I ranked 113th...incredible even though the wet suit was off very quickly. I guess drying the feet to put on socks and then cycling shoes on with 3 velcro's on each does take time....need to rethink this!
Bike race started by cycling south to north the Vlissingen Boulevard and going into the dunes.
Nice bike course that was very technical, with some up/downhill and many (dangerous) turns and occasional sand pile up in the turns which meant caution for me.
In my first lap something funny happened with my aero bottle as it came out of the housing....so being worried that it would fall off on my wheels, I took it and threw it off which unfortunately meant no hydration for me during the 40km bike race. At some points the overtaking was not easy as the course was not wide enough. Wind was a factor on some points but was doable....lots of gear shifting during this race.
Bike course consisted of 4 laps. After the 4th lap back over the Boulevard to the T2.
My bike laps were: 14:12, 13:58: 14:18 and 16:13 for a total of 1:01:11, 39th split place.
Off the bike and into T2 which I thought went very fast...but looking at the numbers after the race I see something different. 1:28, 120th rank...why? what am I doing wrong???? I think its time to get the easy to put on shoe laces....
The biggest fear as I stepped off the bike was will I get cramps like in the past races, especially after not drinking enough during the bike stage. Small steps at first to get legs used to running and I was off. No cramps to report which was a little surprise (I guess the extra magnesium supplements I took last night and this morning worked!).
Run was composed of 2 loops of some 5km.
Run course was very variable...from normal asphalt road, to small bricks to uneven stones, beach sand, to climbs that felt like climbing a mountain (well...for 10m or so)...at which point you had to walk up...so to put it lightly a nice a challenging run. Two laps went fast and I completed the run that according to my Garmin was only some 8.5km long in 39:04, with lap splits as follows: 20:39 and 18:25...showing that I clearly stepped up in the second half of the run. Run end time was 67th among the starting 178.
Finish line photo:
Swim 15:13
T1: 2:14
Bike 1:01:11
T2 1:28
Run 39:04
Total time: 1:59:08
Before I forget...thanks to Anthony for putting a great race on the triathlon map! Also, many thanks to many volunteers that helped making this race a success. Next year will try to make it a family weekend with kids racing in the 1/16th also....
All in all...am I happy?
Yes and no! It was a race that for some reason I didn't feel 100% for. Not sure why that is. I do think it was in my head but time will tell. I think I could have pushed a little more in all 3 disciplines.
Swim - i should pay more attention to the technique...not only in training but also in race. Increase the arm speed, and push the water more with my hands
Bike - I now see I prefer the courses that are less technical...today there were a lot of turns, and I just need some more experience in doing these
Run - I left it too late to start pushing. Need to revise my strategy during the run. So far it was run the first 8km, and then attack....I think this needs to start happening a lot earlier. On top of that I need to train more on my run speed! My normal race run pace is at about 4:25...and today I averaged 4:33...over 9km that is a loss of more than a minute...
Overall happy with the sub 2hr race, but to put it in perspective winner today scored 1:41....and I was 55th, out of 178...so in top 31%. I know I can do better in the future. It wont be easy but will get there.
So what's next...
A break from races until August 27th when I will go for my first Olympic in Aalsmeer. Until then, lots of training, and a vacation!
And finally here are the GPS logs...
and some more photos....
